Tropical Storm Michael racing through the Carolinas towards the Mid Atlantic

Heavy rain and gusty winds will become likely this evening into tonight as Tropical Storm Michael blasts through the DC area. As the storm is moving at a forward speed of over 20 mph, it will be a quick but potent hit to the region.

While scattered showers will be possible this afternoon, heavier rain will start closer to 4 or 5pm from the south and will exit by 1 to 2am to the east.

Wind Speeds and Rainfall Totals:

Gusty winds will be likely this evening around 30-35 mph in the DC Metro and up to 50 mph possible in Southern Maryland closer to the Bay.

Rainfall totals will generally be around 1 to 2 inches in and around the immediate DC Metro. Totals will be higher to the south and east of town, totaling up to 3-4 inches in spots with locally higher amounts.

A Tornado Watch is in effect until 9pm for the Northern Neck of Virginia and points south along I-95 all the way to the NC/SC border. A few tornadoes will be possible this afternoon across North Carolina and central and southern Virginia. While severe weather isn’t likely locally, there will still be a possibility for a quick spin-up in Southern Maryland as Michael gets closer this evening.
