WASHINGTON (ABC7) — The storms that pushed through Friday afternoon brought a bit of everything. Rain, wind, snow, hail... it was a busy afternoon! Here's a look at the three hours when the storms raced across the area.
The storms moved at about 55 mph. The Severe Thunderstorm Warnings quickly moved across the area. These storms were tapping into a very fast moving lobe of energy higher up in the atmosphere. Just the fact that they were moving so quickly meant that some very powerful winds could be translated down to the surface. We saw that happen over a lot of our area. The wind gusts brought down trees and power lines.
Some of the highest wind gusts from this storm were near 60 mph!
As the storms moved through twitter lit up with tons of videos of the wild weather moving through:
Behind the actual storm, the clouds put on a heck of a show as well:
These mammatus clouds show just how turbulent the atmosphere was at cloud level. The bulging sack shaped clouds show the downdrafts within the clouds, literally pushing the clouds outside edge down.
Here's to a much more quiet weekend!
