With time running out on the 2022-2023 season, the Washington Capitals head to Pittsburgh to face the Penguins Saturday night. The Capitals (34-31-8) are currently four points behind Pittsburgh (35-26-10) for the last playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.
Washington will need to make a serious push with only nine games remaining in the season.
The Capitals did have an important player return to the lineup; defenseman John Carlson, who scored in a 6-1 win over the Chicago Blackhawks Thursday night. Now, Washington is hoping Carlson's return will spark a late season push to make the playoffs for the ninth consecutive season.
Washington is 4-4-2 in its last 10 games and scored 6 goals in their last two games.
Alexander Ovechkin has scored 41 goals and 30 assists, while Dylan Strome has four goals and 11 assists in that span.
"We've got nine games left to go on a run and do something special here. If we get into the playoffs, we're going to be one of the hottest teams to get in. We're excited for the challenge, and obviously a huge game coming up on Saturday," said Strome.
The teams have split their previous meetings this season: the Penguins won 4-1 on November 9th and the Caps won in a shootout 3-2 on January 26th.
