Rooney Ready for D.C. Debut

Wayne Rooney practices with D.C. United in SE Washington, DC. July 10, 2018 (ABC7)

The anticipation for D.C. United's Saturday match against the Vancouver Whitecaps is starting to boil over for everyone, even the players.

"I want to be in the stadium, I want to hear the fans," said Head Coach Ben Olsen. "I want to feel that energy."

Adding to the buzz of Audi Field's inaugural match, is the debut of newly acquired super star Wayne Rooney.

"Any debut you make is a big moment," Rooney said. "Before the game I'll think about it obviously, but once kickoff comes and I walk on, my focus will be on the game."

Rooney's focus has been on simply making his teammates better, but his teammates believe his impact will be far greater than that.

"Having Wayne here is a big boost, not just for the team, but for everyone around the city," said defender Steven Birnbaum.

"His quality helps teams win," added Olsen. "But also there's an element of other players around him wanting to win maybe a touch more."
