Oregonians' comments on gas pumping astonish internet

Many Oregonians who've spent their entire lives in the state have avoided pumping their own gas for decades.

A law passed by the Legislature in May and signed into law by Gov. Kate Brown in June will allow Oregon counties with 40,000 residents or less to deviate from that.

The story has made national headlines, as Oregon is one of only two states left nationwide that - for the most part - doesn't allow self-serve pumping.

We asked our Facebook audience if Oregon should allow self-serve pumping state-wide, and we got some interesting responses from Oregonians and non-Oregonians alike:

Here are a few of our favorites:

"There is a reason we require gas attendants to have a pumping license. Many people don't have the training to use gas pumping machinery, and it WILL end in many unnecessary deaths from explosions...but go ahead. Apparently money is all that people care about. Selfish commies."

"It's one of the perks to living in Oregon! I appreciate the gas attendants, and like sitting in my warm car when it’s raining outside !"

"Reading some of the comments from people complaining about having to get out of their car and their hands will smell like gas are cracking me up! I’ve lived in Oklahoma, Arkansas and currently live in Texas. I’m 62 years old and I have pumped my own gas since I was a teenager! I can’t imagine not pumping it! And it isn’t hard! It isn’t rocket science! There are so many things in this world that are worth complaining about but having to pump your own gas just isn’t one of them!"

"I've read so many posts about people not wanting to smell like gas...what the hell are you doing?? Are literally dousing yourself in gasoline?"

"This is just bizzare. I haven't seen a gas station attendant in 30 years. I had no idea that they still existed."

"I don't even know HOW to pump gas and I am 62, native Oregonian.....I say NO THANKS! I don't want to smell like gasoline!"
