LYNCHBURG, Va. (WSET) -- A Florida man thought he had some luck when a $980,000 refund check arrived at his door.
Ramon Christopher Blanchett, of Tampa, Florida, managed to nab that large sum of money after submitting a self-prepared tax return.
The man allegedly claimed that he earned a total of $18,496 in wages - and that he had withheld $1 million in income taxes, according to a forfeiture complaint filed by the U.S. Attorney's Office.
In reality, Blanchett only received $2,098 from one employer, and $1,399 from another, neither of which he withheld taxes from.
While the check was already sent out, the IRS is taking steps to regain that money.
They have managed to seize $919,251 from three separate bank accounts as well as a 2016 Lexus RC registered in his name.
The U.S. Attorney's Office is now fighting over $809 - the same amount of money refunded to Blanchett after he cancelled his insurance on the Lexus.
