WASHINGTON (TND) — As gas prices remain high, air travel may be the best way to get around the country.

According to NerdWallet travel writer Sally French, despite the feeling that everything is more expensive these days, traveling by airplane is actually cheaper on average than it was before the pandemic.

“Actually the 10-year high for airfare was all the way back in 2013 when airfare average costs actually crossed the $300 milestone. Right now, for Feb. 2022, airfare prices average $222. That’s actually less than the $265 average from February 2019," French said.

Since airlines generally buy jet fuel in bulk, spikes in fuel prices haven't necessarily impacted plane tickets yet. French says that won't last long, though, so travelers should book now. Labor shortages and a rise in demand are also expected to drive up ticket prices.

"NerdWallet conducted a survey of more than 2,000 Americans in Feb. 2022 and found that 70% of Americans plan to take at least one leisure trip this year," French said.

In addition to gas prices, another reason why traveling by air is more economical than driving is because of the soaring cost of renting a car.

“We looked at the latest CPI data from Feb. 2022 and they’re up 24% since the same time in 2021. They’re up 39% since the same time pre-pandemic in Feb. 2020," French said.

If a rental car cannot be avoided, French suggests being flexible with booking other parts of the trip.

“Consider booking your trip backwards and book that rental car price actually first and then book an airfare to go with it," French said.

French also advises travelers not hesitate when booking a hotel.

“It doesn’t take a lot for hotel prices to swing up and down so just be cognizant of when you’re booking," French said. "If you find a great deal, lock it in now.”
