National Day of Civic Hacking: Volunteer experts, federal agencies team up to find technology solutions

When you think of hackers, you think of stolen credit card information or website destruction among other things.

So why did the federal government allow hackers access to a ton of information today?

At the National Day of Civic Hacking - or Hackathon - computer experts volunteered across the country and in Northwest D.C. to work with people from NASA, the Department of Labor, and other agencies to build technology solutions using publicly available data.

These civic hackers are using their strong computer skills to solve some social challenges facing our country. And more than 20 federal agencies were in on it.

ABC7's Ashley Coleman has the story.
