El Paso, Texas (KFOX) -- U.S. Border Patrol agent Rogelio Martinez died Sunday after colleagues discovered him and a partner badly injured on duty, officials said.

According to a Border Patrol spokesperson, Martinez and a second agent were patrolling the Big Bend Sector when they were alerted to activity and investigated the area.

Later, one of the agents radioed to headquarters that they were in need of assistance.

When help arrived, agents found both Martinez and his partner badly injured and in need of medical attention.

They were taken to the hospital, where Martinez died.

The other agent is still in serious condition.

The FBI will now take over the case.
