Woman struck and killed by Montgomery Co. school bus in Derwood, Md.
DERWOOD, Md. (WJLA) – A woman has died after being hit by a school bus in Montgomery County Thursday morning.
The pedestrian accident occurred around 9 a.m. at the intersection of Redland Road and Crabbs Branch Way in Derwood, Maryland.
Montgomery County Police say Crucita Reynoso, 58, of Gaithersburg, was walking either in or close to the marked crosswalk on Crabbs Branch Way when a Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) bus made a left-hand turn onto the road and hit her.
The bus stopped about 100 feet beyond where Reynoso was struck. Bus driver Jonathan Chiu, 54, of Gaithersburg, remained on scene waiting for paramedics and police to arrive.
Reynoso was immediately transported to Suburban Hospital in Bethesda with life-threatening injuries. Lt. David McBain described her condition as “grave.” Police later confirmed her passing around 5 p.m. Thursday.
A representative for MCPS confirms there were no children on board the bus at the time of the accident. MCPS added that Chiu, who was uninjured, is a veteran employee with the school district and has a good driving record.
The Montgomery County Collision Reconstruction Unit spent about two hours creating a digital diagram of the crash site. They also marked the locations where Reynoso's white tennis shoe, clothing and purse were strewn across the hot pavement.
The northbound lanes of Crabbs Branch Way at Redland Road re-opened to traffic around noon after being closed for the police investigation.
Investigators are asking anyone who witnessed the accident to call the Montgomery County Police Department at their non-emergency number 301-279-8000.
