StormWatch7 is tracking a wintry weather maker for the first two days of spring. We're in for a 2 part system that will bring rain and a wintry mix today followed by accumulating snow Wednesday.

The spring equinox arrives at 12:15 PM when the sun is directly over the equator. This does make the snowfall forecasts more tricky because the sun angle can work against higher snowfall totals. One thing's for sure, the snow will melt very fast Thursday and Friday.

Plan on a cold, wet, and breezy day, as an area of low pressure tracks south of our area. Rain will mix with sleet and snow throughout the day. Any accumulations today will be farther NW, in the advisory area, to around 1" of snow and ice. Temperatures will remain above freezing for much of the day with breezy northeasterly winds.

It's late tonight that a secondary area of low pressure develops off the coast and wraps in colder air, more precipitation, and that's our chance for accumulating snow throughout the day Wednesday. With temperatures around freezing, slick roads are possible. Snow tapers off Wednesday evening. Accumulations in the D.C. Metro looked to be between 2-4" but those have since been upgraded to between 3-6" with higher totals the farther north and west you go.

Thursday morning will be dry, but icy spots may lead to school delays. Thursday will be blustery and cold. Friday will be sunnier with lighter winds and highs, still below average, in the upper 40s.

WINTER STORM WARNING for western MD & parts of WV until 8PM.
