School board votes to change Washington-Lee's name to Washington-Liberty High School
ARLINGTON, Va. (ABC7) —
Several Washington-Lee alums stormed out of Thursday night’s Arlington County School Board meeting, before the board’s final vote to change the high school’s name to Washington-Liberty.
“There has been a great deal of emotion on all sides around this renaming. It’s time to come together and to remember that this is still a great community, a great school,” said board member Nancy Van Doren.
Prior to the decision, supporters and opponents packed the school board meeting. Opponents were hoping to convince the school board to halt the move.
“If you change the school, for some stupid idiotic thing that happened years and years ago, get over yourselves,” said one opponent.
School board members were also considering the name Washington-Loving, in on honor of Richard and Mildred Loving, but the motion failed.
“The concept of Liberty is woven throughout our history and I find that that there is a clear.organic story and narrative that we can build from, from that name,” board member Barbara Kanninen said.
The board did not announce details on when the change will take effect.
