Team USA is missing this year’s competition but many Washingtonians have still caught World Cup fever. On Tuesday, local fans gathered in Freedom Plaza to watch France take on Belgium.

At the Downtown D.C. Business Improvement District watch party, the crowd included tourists and downtown workers enjoying a late lunch break.

Team Belgium fan Vanessa Clark said, “I just wanted to be in an atmosphere where it's exciting and I can cheer and I can just represent the country proudly.”

Organizers set up inflatable seats, while the crowd huddled under tents and tried to stay cool in the 90 degree heat.

Downtown D.C. BID spokesperson Rachel Hartman said, “Hopefully the temperatures will go down a bit as well.”

The BID will host a second watch party at Freedom Plaza at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday.

There are also many watch parties happening across the region. Some are invitation-only and some public at embassies, bars and pubs.
