WASHINGTON (7News) – Dozens of people were arrested outside the U.S. Capitol Thursday during a voting rights protest, USCP reported. Among those arrested was New York Rep. Jamaal Bowman, according to CNN.
Just before noon, Capitol Police tweeted that demonstrators were blocking one side of the North Barricade outside the Capitol Building.
Police officials said they issued three warnings, but demonstrators refused to move, so they arrested them.
They made a total of 28 arrests: 27 for crowding, obstruction or incommoding and one for violating U.S. Capitol Police.
According to CNN, Democratic Congressman Bowman was among those arrested.
"Today, Congressman Jamaal Bowman joined a voting rights non-violent direct action at the North Barricade of the US Capitol Building and was arrested by the US Capitol Police," Marcus Frias, a spokesman for Bowman, said in a statement to CNN. "We will provide more information and updates as we gather them."
As of 12:55 p.m. the demonstration was cleared.
