Va. man gets 15 years for throwing Molotov cocktails at apartment in iPhone theft dispute

Joseph Kasai (Alexandria Sheriff's Office)

An Alexandria man has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for arson after throwing Molotov cocktails at an apartment in an attempt to kill a man he claimed had stolen his iPhone.

Josepha Kasai, 24, threw a Molotov cocktail at the door of a third-floor apartment in a building in Alexandria in June 2016, according to court records.

Kasai then went outside and threw another Molotov cocktail through a bedroom window at the same apartment.

When a man jumped from the third-floor balcony of the apartment, Kasai chased him with a knife, according to a statement from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia.

The resulting fire trapped nine people on the third floor. The building was evacuated.

After he was arrested, Kasai told police he wanted to kill the man because he had stolen his iPhone.

Kasai was found guilty by a judge after a bench trial on October 25.
