Suspect robs USPS carrier, takes off with keys in Montgomery County: Police

7News has learned another United States Postal Service (USPS) letter carrier was reportedly robbed at gunpoint on Thursday, according to Montgomery County police. Now, a search is underway for the suspect.

According to 7News' reporter Kevin Lewis, police were called to a townhome community in the7600 block of Coddle Harbor Lane in Potomac at approximately 11:45 a.m.

The location is near the Cabin John strip mall.

A mail carrier was delivering mail when she was approached by the suspect who demanded USPS property while displaying a firearm concealed within his waistband area, USPS said. The mail carrier was not harmed.

The suspect ran away on foot with the letter carrier's mailbox keys, according to information at the scene, police told 7News.

The alleged victim described the armed suspect to police as a man in his late 20s to early 30s with a medium build and a mustache, wearing a blue sweatshirt, black and white sneakers and blue jeans. He was "possibly" wearing a black skull cap covering his long hair.

No further details were immediately available.

The U.S Postal Inspection Service is offering a reward of up to $50,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the suspect linked to this incident. The department has released photos of the alleged suspect and is asking for the public’s assistance with information regarding this crime.

Montgomery County Police and the USPIS are actively investigating the incident. Anyone with information is urged to contact the USPIS at 1-877-876-2455 or online here.

Callers may remain anonymous, and a reward is being offered up to $50,000 for any information leading to the arrest and conviction of the suspect.

7News has covered many instances where criminals have been targeting letter carriers in the DMV for many months now and previously reported that the suspects often seek out special keys that open blue USPS collection boxes.

They will also use the stolen keys to access those boxes to look for checks, which they alter, and later cash, officials said.
