DUNN LORING, Va. (WJLA) — The driver of a tractor trailer has died after the vehicle crashed and caught fire under the I-66 overpass on the outerloop of the Beltway in Dunn Loring early Thursday morning.
Virginia State Police say the driver's remains have been transported to the Office of the Medical Examiner in Manassas for an autopsy and positive identification.
Officials say the driver of the vehicle was traveling south on I-495 when it struck a cement barrier. The crash ruptured the truck's fuel tank, starting the fire and causing it to be engulfed in flames.
Damage from the accident blocked several lanes of traffic.
The accident occurred on the outer loop along the I-495 southbound lane of the Beltway at I-66. Officials say multiple vehicles were also involved in the accident, but details on injuries are unknown at this time.
VDOT crews have opened two lanes on the outer loop of the Beltway while the cleanup is underway to avoid morning rush hour traffic.
Express lanes are getting by but multiple lanes on I-66 remain closed.
