Some Maryland shelters waive cat adoption fees during July
BALTIMORE (AP) -- Around 20 shelters across Maryland are waiving adoption fees for cats and kittens during July.
Citing a release by the Maryland SPCA, The Baltimore Sun reported Wednesday that shelters see a "huge influx" of kittens and cats over summer.
Nichole Miller is the director of operations at the Maryland SPCA. She says the offer is part of an initiative launched last year called "Maryland 2000."
The initiative aims to have 2,000 cats and kittens adopted in July. The organization's website says more than 2,300 cats were adopted in July last year. Miller says the initiative also raises awareness about how overcrowded shelters are during summer months.
