Samson Lawrence, MPD officer, charged with trying to kill wife

ACCOKEEK, Md. (WJLA) - A D.C. police officer has been indicted on charges that he attacked, beat and tried to kill his wife in Prince George's County just before Thanksgiving.

Samson Lawrence, a 23-year veteran of the Metropolitan Police Department, has been charged with first and second degree attempted murder and several other charges after the Nov. 24 incident, during which he allegedly beat the victim with metal light fixtures and held her at knifepoint.

At Eddie’s Hair Creations in Adams Morgan on Friday, the buzz was all about three D.C. Police officers on the wrong side of the law – and there seemed to be plenty of varying opinions.

"It sounds like it's not good, but human beings are human beings -- so I don't think police are different," said owner Kofi Asante.

"It's not good. If I'm in trouble, who do I run to?" countered customer Ali Bundu.

The attack began when Lawrence's wife was not able to find a set of screws he needed while installing a television in their Accokeek home. In a fit of rage, authorities say he began spraying Lysol in his wife's face every time she tried to talk. He then began pushing the woman when she refused to make him something to eat.

Officials say that when his wife tried to call 911, Lawrence grabbed the phone away, and when she tried to leave the house, he pushed her to the floor and began hitting her in the head with a metal light post.

The incident escalated once Lawrence's wife got free and tried to leave the house again. At that point, officials say Lawrence forced her into a corner, held knives to her face and throat and threatened to cut her. She was able to get free once again, though, and got to a neighbors house.

By the time authorities responded to the home, Lawrence was gone, but he was found and taken into custody the next day.

"It's a shame because they are here to protect and serve and they are doing the exact opposite; I am astonished to hear about another one," said neighbor Stephanie James.Ten days ago, another veteran officer named Linwood Barnhill was arrested under accusations that he was pimping out young girls. He is still behind bars. And three weeks ago, Officer Marc Washington was arrested on child pornography charges after nude photos of a teenage runaway were found on his camera.

One day later, Washington was released on house arrest, but was soon pulled out of the Potomac River before he died.

No one at the family home would comment on the allegations.
