The Nationals season might be over, but the Capitals are just getting started. To celebrate the return of hockey, the Caps hosted another one of their scavenger hunts Friday to give away tickets to Saturday’s home opener.

The Rock the Red scavenger hunt rewarded Caps fans with eight pairs of free tickets to opening week at the Verizon Center, but for every winner, there were plenty of non-winners.

Every hour on the hour, starting at 9 a.m., the Capitals tweeted new clues, guiding fans to several locations across the D.C. region while still encouraging them to follow traffic laws.

“We don't want anyone speeding or running red lights to get here in time or falling while running,” said Capitals Community Relations Coordinator Heidi Hafker.

Winner Linda Kagey took a day off from work for the scavenger hunt, driving three hours from Yellow Spring, West Virginia.

“Because I love the Caps,” she said laughing.

Most winners arrived within minutes, except for Paul Rodriguez who jogged up to Pentagon Row before any clue had been given.

“I kind of picked up on the trend,” he said. “Silver Spring, outdoor rink. Reston Town Center, outdoor rink.”

But after he arrived, it took him several minutes to remember the code word to claim his prize: "Let's Go Caps!"

“That would have been pretty embarrassing. I already sent the picture to my wife that I already had the tickets,” he said.

The Caps also hosted a scavenger hunt in April, giving out free playoff tickets.

Like last time, Jesse Jones came up short again, running up to Pentagon Row after Rodriguez had already claimed his tickets.

Unlike last time, Jones’ jeans did not rip wide open.

“I have better jeans on, better quality,” he said with laughter. “So no splits now, but there's still time for that I guess.”
