"Say yes if you want me to get started. YESSSSS"

7News Anchor Robert Burton made another stop on his Reading with Robert tour. This week it was Longfields Elementary School in Prince George's County, Maryland.

This week's read was "Mahalia Mouse Goes to College" by John Lithgow.

In this book, Mahalia gets trapped in a student's backpack and then finds herself inside a Harvard classroom. She would win the support of the professor and ends up completing for years of school. Laureen Hammons, who's the school guidance counselor, chose the book.

Afterward, Robert talked with Hammons and the school's principal about the importance of these reading sessions.

"They learn the fluency, they learn vocabulary, they pick up new words, expands their knowledge, they gain background knowledge that's extremely important," Hammons said.

There was also a little dance party at the end. Robert left with a certificate and a lanyard. Go Leopards! Robert tells the kids were attentive and well-behaved.

"The modeling is priceless. We don't have parents whose schedules....sometimes our parents' schedules interfere with students' ability to have a regular reading schedule or reading activity at home. So, when we have visitors, or we have teachers, or we have students within the classroom who are modeling good reading behaviors then that's the best substitute," Carmen Bell, the school principal said.
