Protesters gathered outside of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen's home in Alexandria early Friday morning.

Demonstrators gathered to express their anger with Nielsen and the role they claim she plays in family separations.

Several people stood along the sidewalk near her home with some holding signs. One demonstrator held a sign with Nielsen's face on it featuring the words "child snatcher."

The protest comes after President Donald Trump signed an executive order to stop the practice of separating immigrant children from their parents at the border as a part of his immigration policy. More than 2,300 children have been separated from their parents over the past couple of weeks.

Nielsen initially drafted the executive action for Trump directing her department to keep families together.

Earlier this week, Nielsen and her staff were at a Mexican restaurant in D.C. when she was heckled by protesters yelling "shame on Nielsen, shame on Trump."

When reports and photos circulated of immigrant children living in a holding facility in Texas, it led to additional criticism of Trump's immigration policy.

Senator Kamala Harris, D-Caif, called on Nielsen to resign and tweeted "Under her watch, our government has committed human rights abuses by breaking up families along the Southern border. And she has failed to be accountable and transparent with the American people."

According to an Associated Press story, about 500 of the more than 2,000 children separated from their families at the border have been reunited with their families.

A migrant woman seeking political asylum was reunited with her 7-year-old son at Baltimore Washington-International Airport on Friday.
