Officer shoots, kills armed man in Temple Hills, police say
PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, Md. (ABC7) —
A man who reportedly shot at police was shot and killed by an officer in Temple Hills Monday.
Prince George's County Police say they were called to the scene in the 3300 block of Huntley Square Drive after a caller reported seeing someone stealing from their car. Officers say they found a man they say fit the suspect’s description but he ran across the street to Brinkley Road as an officer tried to talk to him.
Police say the man ran into the Henson Creek Apartments, where they found him hiding in the laundry room. Officers say the man did not comply with their commands and got into a struggle with officers. Police say the man was unaffected after they tried to taser him and that he pulled out a gun.
Monday afternoon, police identified the man who was killed as José Alvarez, 23, of Woodbridge, Virginia.
ABC7's Brad Bell first reported sources told him a police officer shot and killed the man to end the struggle. Officials say one of the officers put his hands on the gun to stop the man from pointing it at police. Authorities say the man fired the gun, leading an officer to fatally shoot him.
Police later posted this cell phone video from a resident of one of the apartments. Gun shots can be heard in the video:
Police are working to identify the man who died on the scene.
Police Chief Hank Stawinski says the officer who grabbed the gun was injured on his hand.
Police say they recovered the man's gun and released the image on Twitter.
