Metropolitan Police officers were on thescene of a shooting in the 2600 block of Birney Pl. in Southeast on Saturday night.

When police arrived at around 8:23 p.m., they found multiple people suffering from gunshot wounds.

Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner Paul Trantham confirmed two men have been reported dead, while seven others were shot with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police have identified the men as Scorpio-Rodney Phillips, 31, of Southeast D.C. and Zoruan Harris, 18, of Southeast D.C.

Among the seven injured is believed to be 8-year-old boy who was conscious and talking when transported to the hospital, Interim Police Chief Peter Newsham confirmed at a press conference. Another of the injured is a woman. The other five were men.

Newsham says police believe a music event was occurring between two apartment buildings at the time of the shooting.

They also believe there may be multiple shooters, but they do not think this was a form of retaliation at the time.
