A man is dead after a car hit his motorcycle and sent it into a guardrail Sunday in Cheverly, police say.

Maryland State Police say they were called to the crash just after 5:00 p.m. on Route 50 east of Kenilworth Avenue. Authorities say a Mercury Cougar driven by Jasmine Ciera Thompson, 22, of Bowie lost control and hit John Willie Junius Vaughan Jr., 61, of Mitchellville while he was on his Harley Davidson. Vaughan's motorcycle then went off the road and hit the guardrail, police say.

Vaughan was taken to Prince George’s Hospital Center where officials say he died from his injuries.

Route 50 was closed for around 2 hours as police responded to the crash.

Police say they do not believe speed or alcohol contributed to the crash and are continuing to investigate.
