Police identify woman mauled to death by pit bull inside D.C. home

Police have identified the woman mauled to death by a pit bull Sunday inside a Southeast D.C. home.

D.C. police said Monday that 55-year-old Angela Smith, of Southeast, was killed in the incident.

Smith was found by officers inside a residence in the 1300 block of Dexter Terrace, SE after police received a report of an unconscious female at the location around 6:32 p.m. According to police, she was suffering from multiple trauma wounds to her body.

Smith was transported to a hospital where she was pronounced dead, police said. An autopsy will be performed to determine her cause of death.

The dog was taken from the scene by the Humane Rescue Alliance. The Associated Press reports that it was humanely euthanized.

It's unclear if Smith was the owner of the dog.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
