MCLEAN, Va. (WJLA) - A woman shot her mother and then herself, leaving them both dead in an apparent murder-suicide at a home in McLean Friday, police say.

According to Fairfax County Police, officers responded to a home in the 6700 block of Dean Drive around 2 p.m. after a caller reported that someone in the home may have been killed.

Police made attempts to communicate with someone in the home and used a reverse 911 call to tell neighbors to stay in their homes. Eventually, they found the bodies of Helen Lorena Hargan, 23, and her mother, Pamela Denise Hansen Hargan, 63.

Police are still working to determine a motive for the shootings.

Pamela had been living in the house with another daughter and 7-year-old granddaughter for the past two years but they had all recently moved out and Helen moved in on Monday. Neither the girl nor anyone else was in the home when police found the bodies of her aunt and grandmother, officers say. Police say the girl is safe with her mother.

Neighbors told ABC7 that many of them did not know Pamela had another daughter.

Police continue to investigate the circumstances of these deaths, and at this point don't believe there is a threat to public safety. Authorities say the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner did autopsies on Helen and Pamela's bodies Saturday to get an official cause of death.

The house is a short walk from Kent Gardens Elementary School and is also not far from McLean High School.
