WASHINGTON (WJLA) - A 32-year-old man was killed and seven others injured in a shooting in Northwest Washington early Saturday morning over Memorial Day weekend, authorities said.

According to D.C. police, officers responded to a shooting around 1 a.m. in the 100 block of Q Street and located Algernon Harvey Jones with multiple gunshot wounds. Police said he was unconscious when they arrived and D.C. Fire & EMS pronounced him dead on scene.

"If you do have a heart you will turn yourself in because my daughter has to live with that for the rest of her life as well as I do," said Annie Ubom, Jones’ ex-girlfriend.

As tears poured out of her eyes, Ubom made a desperate plea after her ex-boyfriend and the father of her 10-year-old daughter was shot to death.

"He was a very active father, you could just count on him and rely on him for anything," said Ubom, who added Jones recently moved back to SE DC from Las Vegas to help care for his daughter.

Evidence markers littered the ground in an apartment building’s parking lot near the corner of First Street NW. Police worked the scene for hours. After further investigation, police said they discovered six men and one woman were also shot during the incident. Several of the victims drove themselves to the hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening. D.C. police said this was not a drive-by shooting.

"When I heard the shots I ducked down because I thought they were a lot more closer than what I heard because I was just hopping out the car. I thought it could have been me," said Tray, who did not want to release his last name.

One of the bullets flew into an apartment building and hit the stairwell. Neighbors told ABC7 a group of people were outside hanging out, which is normal on a Friday night in the neighborhood, but then it turned into chaos.

"I heard maybe 10-12 shots and then I heard people screaming,” said Lisa Parks, who was afraid to look out her window to see what was happening. “It just was so loud and then I could just hear people running and screaming."

DC Police are still investigating a motive. They’re searching for two suspects described as black males wearing dark clothing. Witnesses said they were seen fleeing the scene in a black sedan with tinted windows going eastbound on Q Street.

"I'm lost, all I can do now is just be strong for my daughter, that's it," Ubom said.

D.C. Police Chief Peter Newsham made it clear Saturday afternoon that the department would not tolerate such violence in a tweet that stated: "This kind of reckless disregard for human life won't be tolerated in DC. To those responsible: we will find you and bring you to justice."
