A three-year-old boy was taken to the hospital after he was inside a van that caught on fire in front of a daycare in D.C. Tuesday morning, according to authorities.

ABC7's Suzanne Kennedy reports that a woman was dropping off her infant and her three-year-old son at the Growth Spurts Day Care Center at 5110 Nannie Helen Borroughs Avenue, NE.

She parked her van right next to the building.

The woman was taking her infant son inside when witnesses say they heard a boom and the van could be seen smoking with the 3-year-old inside with flames coming out of the engine.

The woman got back outside and the boy was rescued from the car and taken to the hospital for possible smoke inhalation, according to the D.C. Fire Department.

Fire investigators were interviewing daycare workers and trying to determine what caused the engine fire.
