A 64-year-old man was a patient at Fairfax Inova Hospital Tuesday night. But he also came into the hospital armed with a gun.

Fairfax County Police say Thomas Wimmer, of Ashburn, reportedly shot himself at least once in the upper body. There were no other injuries in the incident.

Officers were called to the medical campus on Gallows Road at 8:50 p.m. for reports of a patient brandishing a gun in the hospital's Heart and Vascular Institute on the fourth floor.

Before officers arrived, they received another call of a shot fired. They found Wimmer in his hospital room with a gunshot wound. He was conscious and refusing commands to put down the gun.

Officers contained the man and attempted to "peacefully de-escalate" the situation. About an hour later, they were able to detain the man and move him over to the emergency room to be treated.

But we later got word that he died from his injuries.

Fairfax County Police say there was never a threat to the public but now they are investigating trying to figure out exactly what this man’s motives were and why he even brought a gun into the hospital.
