Officials: Pedestrian struck on Inner Loop of Beltway near I-270 (MGN Online)

A man was struck and killed on the highway after getting out of his car to pick up an object in the middle of the roadway, according to authorities.

Maryland State Police say they were at the scene with Montgomery County fire, police and the State Highway Administration of the accident that occurred Tuesday night at northbound I-495 near the I-270 split.

Officials reported that the driver of a Mitsubishi, Edward Long, 53, of Montgomery County, got out of the car to retrieve an object in the road where he then got struck by an Audi.

Police rushed to the scene and confirmed that Long and the driver of the Audi, Andrew Robbins, 63, of North Potomac, were rushed to Suburban Hospital for treatment.

Long later died from his injuries, police say.
