WASHINGTON (WJLA) – Retailer Nike opened a brand new store in northeast D.C. on Thursday morning.

Located in the Hecht Co. warehouse in the Ivy City neighborhood, the store is Nike’s first community store on the East Coast. The shop includes a variety of products for men and women such as running, training and sportswear items.

As part of its community-focused mission, the store plans to hire local residents for its staff and will employ its “store athletes” from neighborhoods within a five-mile radius. All store employees will also allocate volunteer hours to neighborhood organizations, Nike officials said.

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser and Nike Vice President of North America Retail Dennis van Oossanen attended the store’s grand opening.
