Biking in DC is now more popular than ever.

And now new, protected bike lanes are popping up, the newest lanes under the Whitehurst Freeway in Georgetown.

These bike lanes didn't come easy! More than five years in the making. And now you may not recognize Water Street in Georgetown.

Traffic was crazy, cars were backed into the curb, but now parking is horizontal, making a buffer between traffic and bikers.

The area is one of the most popular commuter routes. It’s where the Capital Crescent Trail, C&O Canal, Key Bridge, and the Rock Creek Trail all converge. Today's new wide open lanes not only help current bikers, but also inspire others to start biking.

And if you're riding to work and your bike needs a little bit of work. Not to worry. The city has you covered. They've got bike stations with tools: Wrenches, screwdrivers, Allen wrenches, and even an air pump on the back.

Protected bike lanes are being studied around DC. On the list: Colombia Heights, Foggy Bottom, and Brookland.
