WASHINGTON (ABC7) — The Washington Nationals have announced that the team will play an exhibition game against the Boston Red Sox on April 1 at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis. It will be the first game in a three-year agreement for the Nationals to play one game there each year in 2017, 2018, and 2019.
Opponents for the second and third year will be announced later, according to a statement from the Nationals.
Tickets for the game on April 1 will not be available to the public. Complimentary tickets will be given to midshipmen and select members of the U.S. Navy. The game will be played at 2 p.m. ET at the home of the Naval Academy’s baseball team, Max Bishop Stadium.
The game will be televised by ESPN, the Nats say.
“It will be an honor for our players and coaches to take part in these games at the Naval Academy, in front of the brave men and women who have committed to serve our country,” said Mark D. Lerner, principal owner of the Nationals.
Teddy, the Nats’ racing president, met with Bill the Goat, mascot of the Naval Academy, and with the USNA baseball team. (Watch footage of that meeting in video above.)
“As a team that has had a number of players who served in the Navy in two world wars, most notably Ted Williams, we are honored to be part of this special exhibition at the Naval Academy and to play in front of hundreds of midshipmen,” said Red Sox Chairman Tom Werner.
“We’re really excited about this partnership with the Washington Nationals to have the opportunity to showcase the Naval Academy on a national stage,” said USNA superintendent Vice Admiral Walter E. “Ted” Carter Jr.
The Nats and the Red Sox will also play an exhibition game on Friday, March 31 at Nationals Park. Tickets for that game, which will be played at 4:05 p.m. ET, went on sale at noon Thursday, February 9, at nationals.com/tickets.
