ALEXANDRIA, Va. (ABC7) — An MS-13 member has been sentenced to 45 years in prison for his role in a brutal 2015 murder on a playground in Virginia, police say.
Authorities say Alvaro Saenz Castro, now 23, murdered Jose Luis Perez-Ferman with the help of a two others in Beverly Park on November 8, 2015.
The body of Perez was found by a woman walking her dog around 8 a.m. on November 9 in Beverley Park near play equipment. The park is located off North Overlook Drive in the City of Alexandria's Beverley Hills neighborhood.
Perez was cut or slashed in the neck and the Medical Examiner confirmed that his cause of death was the result of "chop and stab wounds to the head and neck."
Police say Perez was "lured" into the park by Leidi Granados Gutierrez, a woman he knew. When Perez entered the park, police say Castro and Reinaldo Membreno Portillo attacked him and "nearly decapitated" him.
Authorities say Portillo plead guilty and was sentenced to 60 years with 30 years suspended and Gutierrez, a teen at the time, was tried as an adult and was given a suspended adult sentence once released from the Department of Juvenile Justice.
