Mother-to-be goes into labor while firefighters install child car seat
GERMANTOWN, Md. (WJLA) —
“It’s never a dull moment here! This is one of the busier fire houses,” said Ian St. John, with Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service, smiling.
That statement rang true on Wednesday morning at Milestone Station 34 in Germantown.
“It would be the first time that I’ve ever had an OB occur, a woman go into labor while we’re at the car seat demo. This is sort of a new thing for me,” he said.
St. John says he’s done the car seat installations and demonstrations for years. “I started it as a side gig,” he said, as he unzipped a car seat from a bag.
On Wednesday morning, he says he was just about finished a demonstration when a woman appeared to start having contractions.
“I said, ‘Are you okay? Do you want to take a break?’ And she says, ‘No, no, no. I’m fine,’” St. John said.
Soon after, though, he says she and her family agreed she should rush to the hospital.
“Certainly a stroke of luck. You know, usually, if we find folks in labor before their due dates, we have to go to them. And she was here on other business,” he said.
“It was easy that she was already here,” said Phillip Smith, a firefighter who was in the ambulance. “Just move her to the other side of the fire house, and out the door we went.”
“We’re happy that she was at the right place at the right time and we could offer her quick assistance,” said Battalion Chief, David Pazos.
As of Wednesday afternoon, crews had not yet gotten word that the baby was born.
