Police: Suspect shot, killed by officer during attempted bank robbery in Silver Spring

Montgomery County police said an officer shot and killed a suspect as he was attempting to rob a bank Wednesday in Silver Spring.

Police said the attempted armed robbery took place at the BB&T Bank at 1100 Wayne Avenue, near the Silver Spring Metro station.

According to police, the suspect demanded $20,000 and said he had a bomb. At some point, he was then shot and killed during a confrontation with the officer.

Bomb technicians with the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service with the assistance of police spent hours diffusing the possible explosive in the suspect's bag after he was killed. An all clear outside the bank was given just after 2 p.m.

Police warned of "potentially significant police and fire department disruptions in the area of the Silver Spring Transit Center" as they investigated, though the transit center and Metro remained open.
