UPPER MARLBORO, Md. (WJLA) — A Prince George's County Police Officer is hoping to make a difference through music.

Officer Alexander Strachan has been playing the violin for over 20 years.

“I graduated in March in this very room,” Strachan said Friday.

The rookie police officer just joined the county police department and was sworn in earlier this spring.

He joined law enforcement in the hopes of helping people in his community.

“You can make a profound difference in someone's life because they are going through something difficult," he said.

Alexander has a pattern of wanting to make a difference. Before his police career began, he was doing it through his music by playing for terminally ill children and adults – especially those on hospice care.

“To have the honor to be able to play for someone as they are taking their final moments here on Earth, it’s just profound," Strachan explained.

So, it’s no surprise that soon after he was sworn in as a police officer his love for music and career came together.

A Twitter post showed the violinist playing for residents at Brightview Senior Living facility in Annapolis.

“I played for veterans to honor their service," Strachan said. "It felt like home because music is inviting and soothing. It's the first time I have been able to play since the pandemic."
