A 64-year-old Columbia woman was reportedly mauled to death by a dog she adopted two weeks ago, police say.

Her husband found Robin Conway dead in her back yard at about 7:20 p.m. Monday with her newly adopted pit bull standing over her, according to a statement from Howard County police.

He tied the dog to a fence post and called 911.

Conway was pronounced dead at the scene when police and paramedics arrived.

Her sister, Susan Eve LeClair, tells ABC7 Conway loved animals and dogs and was excited about the pit bull she’d just adopted.

“She was a caring person above all,” LeClair says. “She cared about animals, she cared about her family, she cared about people.”

Arriving officers found the dog to be still aggressive, barking and lunging on the leash. Animal control officers subdued the dog and later euthanized it.

An autopsy by the state medical examiner will determine the exact cause of Conway’s death.

A necropsy will determine if the dog had rabies or other medical issues. Police had no information about the adoption of the dog, but say that it came from out of state.

Police also say there had been no previous calls to animal control at the address where Conway was found.
