Police say they have shot a man with a gun after he threatened to kill himself and his family in Howard County.

The man is in critical condition and was medevaced to Shock Trauma via helicopter, according to police.

Howard County Police were in a standoff with the approximately 40-year-old white man after he made the alleged threats.

Police say they received a call around 7:00 a.m. that the man was going to a home near Tamar Drive with a gun, threatening to shoot himself and members of his family.

The man was attempting a suicide by cop.

Police say they saw the man in his Jeep Cherokee and as they tried to approach he pointed the gun at his head and caused police to back away. When Police did approach the man after a special tactical medical team had been assembled, the man got out of the car took the gun away from his head and pointed it at police. One officer fired one shot hitting the man in the torso.

Tamar Drive has been closed at MD-175 as police and fire as rescue units respond to the scene.

Police have not released the condition of the man's family.
