Survivor releases statement after DC man sentenced to 48 years in prison for rape
WASHINGTON (ABC7) —
Survivors saw another victory on Tuesday, as 24-year-old Demarco Myles was sentenced to another 48 years in prison.
Surveillance video captured Myles at a Howard University dorm in November 2012, where he raped a 19-year-old in her room at knife-point.
Court documents show that police tracked him down based on his phone number that he left after raping the teen.
Myles was already serving 40 years in prison for stabbing a woman more than 20 times on Rhode Island Avenue in Northeast in October 2012.
“I am overjoyed and relieved that the other victim of DeMarco Myles is finally receiving some form of justice. No prison sentence can ameliorate the pain, devastation, and lifelong post traumatic stress we must endure as survivors, but it is my hope that the other victim can now feel some measure of peace,” said the woman who was attacked at the Rhode Island Avenue Apartments. “I am thankful that the justice system worked in a situation where it normally does not for survivors of sexual assault, particularly women of color.”
