WASHINGTON (ABC7) — Lawmakers are making another push to make Washington, D.C. the 51st state.
Mayor Muriel Bowser is holding a news conference on the measure with a record high number of co-sponsors.
In 2016, voters endorsed a draft constitution that would have residents electing a governor, not a mayor, and a 21-seat state legislature instead of a city council.
The constitution included new borders for the proposed state, with the White House, the Capitol and the National Mall carved out as a separate federal enclave.
