Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam's yearbook photo shows one in blackface, another in Klan robe

A photo on Gov. Ralph Northam's 1984 medical school yearbook page shows a man in blackface standing next to a man dressed as a member of the Ku Klux Klan.

Northam admitted Friday that he is in that photo, and called it "clearly racist and offensive," but didn't say which costume he was in.

The photos in Northam's section of the yearbook page include a headshot of the governor, two more casual photos of him, and a photo of two men in costume, holding beers. Below it is the quote, "There are more old drunks than old doctors in this world so I think I’ll have another beer.”

Eastern Virginia Medical School has confirmed to ABC7 that this photo does appear in a student-produced yearbook from that year, and provided a scan of the page in question.

The photo began circulating on Friday afternoon, and the governor addressed it in a statement early Friday evening, apologizing for the photo and reaffirming his commitment to his office.

"I am deeply sorry for the decision I made to appear as I did in this photo and for the hurt that decision caused then and now," Northam said. "This behavior is not in keeping with who I am today and the values I have fought for in military, in medicine, and in public service. But I want to be clear, I understand how this decision shakes Virginians’ faith in that commitment."

The statement came after many state officials called for him to address the photo, including the Virginia GOP.

After several calls for his resignation from state Republicans, high-profile fellow Democrats, and the NAACP, Northam released a video on Twitter that reiterated his earlier statement and made it clear he does not currently plan to resign over the incident.

"I have spent the past year as your governor fighting for a Virginia that works better for all people," he said. "I am committed to continuing that fight through the remainder of my term."
