Fairfax PD celebrates 30th anniversary of 'Santa's Ride'

ABC7

This week marks 30 years of Santa and his helpers delivering toys and smiles to children across Fairfax County as part of the police department’s Santa’s Ride program.

Northern Virginia bureau chief Tim Barber talked to the very first FCPD Santa about this 30-year legacy.

The program was started by Buddy Sekely, now a retired Fairfax County police officer.

“When you walk into a hospital room where as kid is just clearly in pain and sick,” Sekely said, “and Santa walks in with a present, and their eyes light up – I don’t care who you are, that will get you.”

Sekely was the first to suit up back in 1988, after the department got the idea from Montgomery County police.

“t’s unbelievable,” Sekely said, “now it’s so big it takes them four days to do it. We used to do it in one day.”

ABC7’s Tim Barber has more about the tradition in the video above.
