FAIRFAX, Va. (ABC7) — After a police investigation that lasted more than two years, a Fairfax man is now charged in the 2017 murder of his wife.
It was January 6, 2017 when Fairfax County Police were called to a double shooting on Okla Drive in Fairfax. A husband and wife, Laszlo and Donna Pentek, were found shot inside their home. There were no signs of forced entry.
Fifty-one-year-old Donna Pentek was pronounced dead at the scene. Fifty-five-year-old Laszlo Pentek was shot and injured, but survived.
He spent the last two years living inside the home where the crime happened. Then on Friday, a SWAT team swarmed the neighborhood and took him into custody.
“Today I announce that justice is served in an active 2017 homicide investigation,” Major Ed O’Carroll said in a news conference announcing Pentek’s arrest. “Sometimes complex cases truly do take time to work.”
Pentek was indicted on one count of first-degree murder and one count of using a firearm in committing a felony.
O’Carroll said the investigation involved forensic work and more than two years spent reviewing evidence and chasing leads.
On Friday, several of Pentek’s neighbors say they always suspected he was to blame in his wife’s murder.
Neighbor Vanessa Parkinson recalled one incident during which she witnessed Pentek yelling at his wife in front of the couple’s two kids.
“They were all outside and he was just not very nice to her and we just heard a little bit of it,” Parkinson said. “So we knew something was not going well between them.”
Not long after that, she says Donna Pentek was gone. Parkinson says her heart hurts for the couple’s young children.
“It’s really sad. You know, they lost their mom and now they find out their dad is accused of doing it. It’s a sad thing,” she said.
Some details of the case still remain a mystery.
Fairfax County Police have not yet said whether Laszlo’s gunshot wound was self-inflicted or whether there was some sort of struggle between husband and wife. Investigators say they can’t yet talk about that part of the case since a trial is still pending.
Laszlo Pentek is now being held at the Fairfax County Detention Center.
“This is a sad case. It’s a murder. A member of our community. A daughter, a wife, a mom, and a friend to many,” O’Carroll said.
