FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. (ABC7) — Angela DeHart, a Glasgow Middle School teacher in Fairfax County, has been chosen as one of eight teachers in Virginia to receive the Virginia Lottery Super Teacher Award.
DeHart, who teaches home economics at the 6-8 grade level, was given the award in a surprise ceremony at the school in front of students, faculty, and guests.
The award is sponsored by the Virginia Lottery, the Virginia PTA and Virginia-based The Supply Room Companies. It includes a $2,000 cash prize and an additional $2,000 classroom credit from The Supply Room Companies, according to a statement released by Virginia Lottery News.
The panel that chose the eight Super Teachers received more than 1,000 nominations in Virginia. One teacher each is selected from Virginia’s eight geographic regions. DeHart was chosen as the teacher representing the Northern Virginia region.
In nominating DeHart, fellow teacher Rae Benavage said of DeHart:
She has collaborated with Glasgow’s science departments on many occasions and this year it resulted in Glasgow being awarded a $1,000 grant for establishing a recycle program in the Kitchen labs, cafeteria, and other strategic places in the building. She has taken students to attend the Annapolis Naval Academy Girls STEM day in Annapolis and a STEM convention in PA. Her desire to help students broaden their exposure to what is possible, what is being offered/available for them to take advantage of is an important attribute in their ability to see the possibilities in their future.
