Volunteers gathered Thursday to assemble food packages for families in need as part of Dominion Energy's Weekend Food for Kids program.

About 1,600 bags of non-perishable foods were put together for qualified families in Fairfax and Prince William counties.

The volunteer event took place in Herndon Thursday, with the goal of providing food to children "who otherwise may not have food to eat over the weekend," a Dominion Energy news release stated.
