Police: Body of missing woman found in driveway of abandoned home in Northeast D.C.

Joni Rockingham (Metropolitan Police Department)

A woman's body was found in the rear driveway of an abandoned home Tuesday morning in Northeast Washington, according to police.

Neighbors told ABC7 News the victim's body was found in a trash can behind the home.

According to police, officers located an "unconscious and unresponsive adult female" in the 300 block of 34th Street, NE, at around 8:36 a.m.

D.C. Police Chief Peter Newsham said the incident looked "very suspicious" at a press conference held this morning.

Investigators strongly believed the woman was Joni Rockingham, a woman they'd been searching for since she was first reported missing around the time of Thanksgiving.

On Tuesday night, police confirmed the woman was indeed 53-year-old Rockingham, of Northeast Washington.

The cause of death was determined to be from multiple stab wounds and has been ruled a homicide.
