DC Police: 8-year-old boy shot near basketball court at rec center in Southeast

DC Police say an eight-year-old boy was shot on the basketball court at a rec center in Southeast on Saturday night.

The shooting happened shortly after 8 p.m at the Fort Davis Community Center.

According to officials, the eight-year-old received non-life-threatening graze wounds.

Police say the boy told them he was playing basketball on the court when he heard the sound of two or three gunshots.

The boy says he ran from the court but then he got knocked to the ground by a crowd of people running away. They boy then says he felt "a burn to his lower leg," police say.

Medics got to the scene and treated the boy before having him taken to Children's Hospital.

According to bystanders, a neighborhood cookout was going on at the center.

Police have not released any information on the shooter at this time.
