WASHINGTON (WJLA) — Giving Tuesday kicks off the season of giving, but many local groups like the Central Union Mission work year round to help those in need.
On this Giving Tuesday, the Central Union Mission is asking people to help them collect money to provide nearly 1,800 holiday care packages to men, women and children in need.
“We know not everybody can get their hands dirty helping the homeless, but they can contribute cash which is vitally needed this time of year to support everything that we do,” said Joe Mettimano, President of Central Union Mission. “Folks can volunteer their time by coming here to the shelter by serving meals, they can donate shoes and socks, but also importantly donating their voice, spreading the word about the mission on social media, hosting an event at their home.”
The Central Union Mission comprised a list of 8 ways to help people experiencing homelessness all year round.
As people look to give this holiday season, Mettimano said whether you are giving to the Central Union Mission or another charity, “Look for organizations that have been around for a while and have a good reputation.” He adds “Often times, the best organizations have the best word of mouth so you’re going to hear about them that way, but there are also online resources like Charity Navigator you can look at to rate charities.”
